Peu d'études se sont attardées sur la dimension matérialiste de la pensée de J-J. Rousseau. si ce n'est que pour s'en tenir largement à l'analyse de Marcel Raymond qui voyait dans le philosophe genevois un continuateur de l'empirisme lockien. Or, l'oeuvre de Rousseau, en particulier dans sa forme autobiographique et théorique, s'appuie continuellement sur le matérialisme ambiant de son époque. La matérialisme rousseauiste constitue même la clé permettant d'éclairer la relation complexe que le citoyen de Genève entretient avec ses contemporains (...) philosophes, oscillant entre un attachement certain au passé et un regard profondément visionnaire sur l'homme et la société. À travers "le matérialisme du sage", cette formule tirée des Confessions qui illumine si bien sa pensée, Rousseau accommode tout le poids de la tradition - histoire, religion, politique - avec le renouveau philosophique des Lumières. Le matérialisme n'implique pas une fatalité; il est plutôt un savoir qu'il entend exploiter afin de trouver un semblant de stabilité et de bien-être au sein d'un monde sujet au perpétuel changement. Toute l'audace de sa pensée est d'avoir fait de la réalité tragique du matérialisme la condition de possibilité de toute liberté réelle, et du bonheur qu'il espère voir l'homme en tirer.. (shrink)

The corporate financial performance (CFP)–corporate social performance (CSP) relationship has been investigated many times over the past few decades, yet the notion of CSP has generally been understood to be a single, monolithic aspect of corporate strategy. This article examines the common CFP–CSP understanding in three distinct ways: (1) by extending the evaluation of CSP as a complex, multistakeholder notion; (2) by analyzing CSP's relationship with the firm's financial performance at a given point in time as a lead (independent) variable (...) in the relationship and as a lag (dependent) variable in the relationship; and (3) for both positive and negative stakeholder relationships. The results indicate that the employee emerges as the stakeholder group most strongly linked to CFP, followed by the consumer stakeholder. The natural environment and the community stakeholder group are minimally associated with CFP. General support is found for a CFP–CSP relationship at a given point in time, with some support found for CSP as a lead (independent) variable. When used as a measure of financial performance, return on assets is more often correlated with CSP than is return on equity. These results and their implications are discussed. (shrink)

In this chapter, the authors wish to study the transformation of online profiles created during a user’s lifetime into the profile of a deceased person. To this end, they first focus on the possibilities available to the bereaved to maintain the deceased’s profile and how they manage this. When these perpetuated profiles are taken in hand, they undergo changes. This phenomenon of transformation is what the authors have termed “profilopraxy,” whereby the deceased’s profile is changed so that it complies with (...) the idea that the bereaved have of the person, and/or the affixment of death stigmas to make the profile recognizable as that of a dead person. As the most obvious way of affixing these stigmas involves announcing the death of the deceased, the authors analyze this announcement. They identify the enunciators who make the announcement, the places where it appears and the way it is formulated. On this basis, the authors show that the characteristics of social networking sites profoundly upset traditional hierarchies, since friends and family both intervene on the profile pages to affix death stigmas and shape them for posterity. As a result, the transformation of a living person’s profile into a dead person’s profile stems from a co-enunciation involving viewpoints that are not always similar. Tensions may even be expressed among the co-enunciators active on a profile. Moreover, some choose to use other spaces in which to produce a representation of the deceased, thus creating an image that better fits the one they wish to see handed down to posterity. (shrink)

Certamente a consciência é algo extremamente familiar e, ao mesmo tempo, enigmático para nós. Seu aspecto fenomenal, denominado de consciência fenomenal, impõe inúmeras barreiras às abordagens reducionistas propostas pelo quadro teórico fisicista/funcionalista. Tamanha são as dificuldades suscitadas pela consciência fenomenal a estas abordagens reducionistas que os problemas referentes a este aspecto da consciência constituem o “problema difícil da consciência”. Desta forma, este artigo possui três objetivos: primeiramente demonstrar a necessidade de distinguir dois conceitos referentes a dois aspectos distintos da consciência; (...) posteriormente, como consequência da diferenciação entre dois conceitos de consciência, serão expostos os problemas relativos a estes dois conceitos; por fim, defenderemos a existência de uma lacuna explicativa entre as explicações provenientes das teorias reducionistas e a consciência fenomenal. In continental China, the impact of modern Western ideologies such as Marxism and the anti-traditional movement at the turn of the 20th century continue to play a significant role in current debates in the visual arts. Specifically, the question of whether contemporary Chinese visual arts should preserve, reinvent, or react against their traditions has become a very controversial topic. This essay attempts to show the relevance of dialogue with the past by focusing on a traditional theme – cloud imagery – (...) and the ways it was used in the Mao Zedong era (1942-1976). In spite of the political and social radicalism that promoted a break from tradition, cloud imagery was reinterpreted to convey such a radical ideology. Hence, in a hermeneutical irony, by promoting the idea of a better “cultural present” severed from tradition the Mao era simply confirmed how vital it is as a principle to maintain a relationship with the past. However, whether such a re-appropriation for socio-political purpose can be called a dialogue remains open to debate. (shrink)

Neste momento, por exemplo, tenho uma experiência visual do computador, uma experiência auditiva do latido do meu cachorro, uma experiência da pressão que exerço sobre a cadeira e uma experiência do fluxo de pensamentos que me ocorrem. Contudo, existem filósofos que afirmam que estas experiências conscientes permanecem todas unidas numa espécie de estado consciente abrangente, e outros filósofos que afirmam a existência de “micro-consciências” associadas com cada experiência consciente que não são necessariamente (...) interligadas e em sua maioria são autônomas. Isto é, alguns estudiosos defendem que a consciência é una, e outros defendem que ela é fragmentária. Neste artigo, apresentaremos as concepções unitária e fragmentária da consciência e discutiremos os problemas suscitados por cada uma. (shrink)

Comprehension and recall of informed consent was assessed after the study closure in the parents/guardians of a birth cohort of children participating in an intensive three-year diarrhoeal surveillance. A structured questionnaire was administered by field workers who had not participated in the study's follow-up protocol. Of 368 respondents, 329 (89.4 per cent) stated that the study was adequately explained during enrolment, but only 159 (43.2 per cent) could recall that it was on diarrhoea. Nearly half (45.9 per cent) of the (...) respondents stated that they would not have participated if free medical treatment was not provided, although the free medical clinic was not offered at enrolment. Spousal approval (82.9 per cent) was the most important factor in the decision to participate. In the multivariate analysis, maternal education was associated with increased awareness about the disease under study: mothers without any formal education had the lowest awareness (OR = 3.47, 95 per cent CI = 1.60–7.51). Despite a high compliance with the study protocol, retention of understanding about the research study was low over a long period of time. Although the local government provides free healthcare in the study area, respondents cited free healthcare as an important reason for participation, highlighting the need for true health equity before meaningful informed consent can be obtained. This article, originally delivered at the Third Oxford International Newman Conference (Somerville College, 15 August 2004), looks at the long association between Newman and Gladstone and finds a combative mutual respect that survived not only Newman’s conversion but also Gladstone’s attack against Pope Pius IX and English Roman Catholics.

Gladstone's ideas are far more accessible for analysis now that, following the publication of his diaries, a record of his reading is available. This book traces the evolution of what the diaries reveal as the statesman's central intellectual preoccupations, theology and classical scholarship, as well as the groundwork of his early Conservatism and his mature Liberalism. In particular it examines the ideological sources of Gladstone's youthful opposition to reform before scrutinizing his convictions in theology. These are shown to (...) have passed through more stages than has previously been supposed: he moved from Evangelicalism to Orthodox High Churchmanship, on to Tractarianism and then further to a broader stance that eventually crystallized as a liberal Catholicism. His classical studies, focused primarily on Homer, also changed over time, from a version that was designed to defend a traditional worldview to an approach that exalted the depiction of human endeavour in the ancient Greek poet. An enduring principle of his thought about religion and antiquity was the importance of community, but a fresh axiom that arose from the modifications of his views was the centrality of all that was human. The twin values of community and humanity are shown to have conditioned Gladstone's rhetoric as Liberal leader, so making him, in terms of recent political thought, a communitarian rather than a liberal, but one with a distinctive humanitarian message. As a result of a thorough scrutiny of Gladstone's private papers, the Victorian statesman is shown to have derived a distinctive standpoint from the Christian and classical sources of his thinking and so to have left an enduring intellectual legacy. It becomes apparent that his religion, Homeric studies and political thought were interwoven in unexpected ways.The evolution of Gladstone's central intellectual preoccupations, with religion and Homer, is the theme of this book. It shows how the statesman developed from Evangelism to Orthodox High Churchmanship, on to Tractarianism and then further to a broader stance that eventually crystallized as a liberal Catholicism. It demonstrates also that his Homeric studies developed over time. Neither aspect of his thinking was kept apart from his politics. Gladstone's early conservatism emerged from a blend of classical and Christian themes focusing on the idea of community. While that motif persisted in his speeches as Liberal leader, the category of the human emerged from his religious and Homeric ideas to condition the presentation of his Liberalism. In Gladstone's mind there was an intertwining of theology, Homeric studies and political thought. (shrink)

This essay examines Meera Margaret Singh’s exhibition Nightingale in the time and place of the liminal space we call “hotel.” In intertexual dialogue with Wayne Koestenbaum’s Hotel Theory, the author not only reviews Singh’s intimate photographs of her mother, she reads the images with and against the architecture in which they are exhibited. The Gladstone as exhibition space redoubles Singh’s emphasis on the tense connectivity of apparent binaries: youth and age, public and private, artist and model, object and spectator, (...) living and dying. The quotidian activities of hotel living—guests’ arrivals, departures, and returns—become inextricable pieces of Singh’s site-specific installation. The author theorizes what Freud calls the “foretaste of mourning” in this work, grappling with what will be but is not yet the death of the mother. Singh’s Nightingale proposes that we do not “work through” mourning: mourning is a perpetual way of being in the present. (shrink)
